This week in historyFeb. 27 1965: The world’s first wide-body transport aircraft An-22 (Antei) makes a test flight as a brainchild and construction of the Oleh Antonov Design Bureau. 1995: The Ukrainian Center for Postprivatization Support of Enterprises opens in Kyiv. Feb. 28 1654: Polish king Jan II Casimir issues a declaration urging the Zaporozhian Host to remain faithful to the Rzeczpospolita. 1920: The commander of the Southwest Front orders the setting up of the post of head of the rear lines service tasked with combating the peasant insurgent movement all over Ukraine. March 1 1944: Khreshchatyk St. starts being rebuilt on a massive scale in Kyiv. 1996: Regular Kyiv-London-Kyiv bus runs are launched. March 2 1993: The president of Ukraine signs an edict establishing the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. 1994: Ukraine and Japan sign the first agreement in their history “On Cooperation in the Liquidation of Nuclear Armaments in Ukraine and Formation of the Committee on Cooperation”. March 3 1866: A Russian public library is founded in Kyiv (currently: the National Parliamentary Library of Ukraine). 1919: The RSFSR signs the Peace Treaty of Brest, thus recognizing Ukraine’s independence. March 4 1919: The Radnarkom of the Ukrainian SSR adopts a decree canceling payment for school tuition. 1989: Kyiv hosts the Republican Constituent Conference to establish the Ukrainian Memorial Historical and Educational Society. March 5 1918: The Mala Rada (Small Council) of the Ukrainian National Republic adopts the law on the administrative status of Kyiv. 1992: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passes the bill on the Representative of the President of Ukraine.
