Oct. 9 1928: The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Theological Academy is founded in Lviv.

1944: The NKVD of the USSR adopts a resolution on the liquidation of “OUN gangs in Western Ukraine.”

Oct. 10 1932: The Kharkiv-based Institute for Physics and Technology carries out the USSR’s first lithium fusion reaction.

1973: The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine adopts a top-secret resolution on carrying out a series of repressive measures against unregistered religious sects.

Oct. 11 1653: The Assembly of the Land adopts a decision to accept the Zaporozhian Host under the Muscovite tsar’s protectorate.

1995: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopts the Program of Action of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Oct. 12 1924: The Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic is established as part of the Ukrainian SSR.

1960: Nikita Khrushchev bangs his shoe on the UN General Assembly lectern, declaring “We will bury you!”

Oct. 13 1914: Count Bobrinsky, the Governor General of Halychyna, issues an edict banning the dissemination of Ukrainian-language books.

1992: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approves the appointment of Leonid Kuchma as prime minister.

1919: The Directory and the army swear allegiance to the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR) in Kamianets-Podilsky.

2001: The world’s first statue of Symon Petliura, head of the Directory of the Ukrainian National Republic, is unveiled in Rivne, Ukraine.

Oct 15 1926: The Russian Drama Theater opens in Kyiv (named after Lesia Ukrainka in 1939).

2004: The Kyiv-based Aviant Works and the Antonov Aircraft Design Bureau finish constructing the first AN-148 plane.
