This week in historyOct. 23 1859: The first Sunday school opens in Kyiv. 1990: The Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR resolves to annul Article 6 of the Constitution about the Communist Party’s “guiding role.” Oct. 24 1991: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopts a resolution on Ukraine’s nuclear-free status. 1994: A friendship and cooperation treaty between Ukraine and Canada is signed during President Leonid Kuchma’s visit. Oct. 25 1938. The Union of Artists of Ukraine is founded at the first congress of Soviet Ukrainian artists. 2001. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopts a new Land Code. Oct. 26 1939: The Popular Assembly of Western Ukraine issues a declaration on the transfer of all power to the working people in cities and villages, establishment of Soviet power, etc. 1947: The largest postwar deportation of Ukrainians (approximately 78,000) from the western oblasts begins. Oct. 27 1659: In Pereiaslav Yurii Khmelnytsky signs a treaty with Muscovy, regulating Cossack Ukraine’s political and legal status as part of the empire (the Pereiaslav Articles). 1882: Mykhailo Kropyvnytsky’s itinerant professional Ukrainian drama group makes its maiden appearance in Yelysavethrad. Oct. 28 2001: President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine and President Boris Trajkovski of Macedonia meet in the Crimea, where they agree to continue military and technological cooperation. 2004: A military parade and veterans’ march commemorating the 60the anniversary of Ukraine’s liberation from the Nazis takes place in Kyiv. Oct. 29 1800: The first blast furnace is launched at the Luhansk steel works. 2001: Prime Minister Anatolii Kinakh of Ukraine visits the United States to discuss prospects of strategic cooperation.
