Nov. 27 1648: King Jan Casimir II of Poland signs an edict guaranteeing Cossack privileges.

1918: The Ukrainian Academy of Sciences is founded in Kyiv (today: the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).

Nov. 28 1994: The Constitutional Commission holds a session officially resuming the constitutional process in Ukraine.

2004: Clergymen and parishioners gather at the largest cathedral in Kyiv, St. Volodymyr’s, to offer up prayers for a peaceful solution to the political crisis during the presidential campaign in Ukraine.

Nov. 29 1989: The remains of victims of the Stalinist repressions are transferred to a new burial site in Ivano-Frankivsk.

2004: The National Salvation Committee, headed by Viktor Yushchenko, sends an ultimatum to incumbent President Leonid Kuchma.

Nov. 30 1921: The All-Ukraine Central Executive Committee passes a resolution pardoning workers and peasants who served in enemy armies and are still abroad.

2004: Germany’s Chancellor Gerhard Schroder discusses the election campaign situation in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Dec. 1 1991: The Ukrainian people confirm the Proclamation of Ukrainian Independence during a referendum. Leonid Kravchuk is elected president of Ukraine.

2004: The Verkhovna Rada resolution retiring Viktor Yanukovych’s cabinet and forming a government of people’s confidence goes into effect.

Dec. 2 1960: The world’s largest blast furnace “Kryvyi Rih-Komsomol” is launched at the local steel works.

2004: The European Parliament resolves to annul the results of the second round of presidential elections in Ukraine.

Dec. 3 1932: The Council of People’s Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR bans the sale of meat and cattle in all regions of Ukraine that have failed to meet the delivery quotas.

2004: The Supreme Court of Ukraine annuls the results of the second round of presidentiial elections.
