April 14 1940: The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR adopts a decree instituting civilian registrar’s offices in Ukraine’s western oblasts.

April 15 1919: The Central Executive Committee of the Soviets of Ukraine adopts a decree establishing the Supreme Revolutionary Tribunal.

April 16 1710: Pylyp Orlyk is elected hetman of Ukraine. The Pacts and the Constitution of Rights and Freedoms of the Zaporozhian Host (one of Europe’s first constitutions) are adopted.

April 17 1924: The All-Ukrainian Central Executive Committee (VUTsVK) adopts a resolution on combating child homelessness.

1991: The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passes a bill on the rehabilitation of victims of political repressions in Ukraine.

April 18 1961: Believers demonstrate in Kyiv against the closure of St. Andrew’s Church.

1996: Ukraine and Great Britain sign an agreement on the seizure and confiscation of revenues and implements connected with criminal activities and on mutual assistance in combating drug trafficking.

April 19 1917: The All-Ukrainian National Congress proclaims Ukraine’s national and territorial autonomy and elects a new membership of the Central Rada headed by Mykhailo Hrushevsky.

2002: President Leonid Kuchma of Ukraine begins his official visit to Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan.

April 20 1978: The Supreme Soviet of Ukraine adopts the new Constitution of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

1990: The founding conference of the Ukrainian Republican Society “Children of Chornobyl” is held.
