11 September, 16:07

The 43rd Molodist Film Festival will open on October 19 at the Ukraina Palace with the premier of a new film by Andrzej Wajda Walesa. Man of Hope, which will arrive to Ukraine straight from the Venice Film Festival. However, the biggest news is that one of the leading Austrian and European film directors, winner of the world’s most prestigious film awards Ulrich Seidl is coming to Kyiv. This summer he has already been to Kyiv and then he gave an exclusive interview to our newspaper (see The Day’s issue No. 46 from August 14, 2013). This was a trip scheduled as a part of filming a program for the TV channel “Arte.” This time the film director comes specifically for the festival. The world’s first complete retrospective of the life of Seidl titled Ulrich Seidl. The Total Retrospective, as well as the exhibition featuring 42 original photographs “Love. Faith. Hope” dedicated to the sensational trilogy Paradise, will be presented at Molodist Film Festival. It is important to stress that Kyiv audience for the first time will get a chance to see everything – from documentaries, made by master Seidl, to Paradise. Besides, the film director will hold a master class.

Speaking about the famous names, we should mention the program “Storichia” dedicated to the 100th birth anniversary of classics of film directing – Stanley Kramer and Rene Clement, acting – Vivien Leigh and Marika Roekk, and literature – Irwin Shaw: they all were born in 1913. Besides, we will have a chance to see the winners of the international festivals: Venice, Berlin, Cannes, Locarno, and traditional collections of German (German Wave), French (French Connection), Scandinavian (Scandinavian Panorama), and Russian films. The section “Orient Express” this year will be expanded – film by Asian directors will be added to the cinema of Eastern Europe.

Another notable innovation is the competition “Molodist for Children” with children’s jury. What concerns the main competition, there are no changes: the main sections – student’s film, the first short film (fiction, animation, documentary), and first full-length feature film. The prize in each category is 2,500 US dollars and a “Scythian Deer” statuette, prize in the national competition, where Ukrainian short films will be presented, is the same. The Grand Prix of the festival is a “Scythian Deer” and an award of 10,000 US dollars. According to Khalpakhchi, 1,600 applications from 82 countries have been received by the organizing committee of the festival. It is especially nice that 72 of them are Ukrainian films and five are full-length films.

Among the special events of the festival is the premiere of the restored film by Viktor Ivanov Chasing Two Hares with a newly discovered Ukrainian original audio track.

The 43rd Molodist Festival will be open from October 19 through 27. The festival center is the cinema “Kyiv.” Other festival locations are “Zhovten” cinema and “Kinopanorama” cinema, as well as cultural and educational center “Master-Class.”
