The Plast has established the Board of Trustees

The 155th anniversary of Robert Baden-Powell’s birth was celebrated on February 22, commemorating the British general who had founded the world’s largest youth movement by publishing his bestselling Scouting for Boys. Ukrainian Scouts (Plast members) marked this day by establishing the Board of Trustees as an advisory body for the Plast scouting organization. “Young people should be conscious citizens and see good examples. There are 6,000 active Plast members in Ukraine now, but we should be 200,000-strong here,” world-famous scientist, a member of the Club of Rome, Plast, and the Honorary Chairman of the Board of Trustees Bohdan Hawrylyshyn said at the meeting. He also spoke about his personal experience of scouting and stressed the importance of educating the new generation of Ukrainians according to the Plast philosophy and methods.

This newspaper has long supported the Plast’s initiatives aimed at the formation of a higher-quality civic society, while The Day’s editor-in-chief Larysa Ivshyna has accepted the offer to join the Board of Trustees. Academics, business people, and civic activists will join the well-known public persons Ivan Malkovych, Mykola Kniazhytsky, and Iryna Tykhomyrova to help the Plast to promote comprehensive patriotic self-education of the Ukrainian youth on the principles of Christian morality and to nurture conscious and responsible citizens, leaders of the Ukrainian society.

“If I can be useful in some way to an organization that does so much for the children and youths of Ukraine, I am totally willing to find the inner strength and resources to do so,” politician Lesia Orobets said. She is also the mother of a young girl scout and has recently become the board’s coordinator.

The Plast and the Ukrainian scouting mark their centennial this year, with celebration to be held in August during the anniversary International Jamboree.
