Refugees to be accommodated in modular buildings

Modular housing facilities will be constructed in Dnipropetrovsk to provide refugees with shelter and basic comfort during the coming winter. The project was discussed at a working meeting held at the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council’s building by the authorities and representatives of the German Federal Enterprise for International Cooperation (GIZ), who are now studying the conditions for the construction of housing for displaced persons from the eastern Ukrainian warzone. This project involves three kinds of housing facilities: for a short stay of one to three nights, for mid-term stays of up to 12 months, and long-term housing for over a year. Several prefab modular buildings, which can accommodate 400 people, will be constructed in Dnipropetrovsk in a month. Further plans call for such mobile structures to be constructed in Kryvy Rih, Pavlohrad, Dniprodzerzhynsk, and Nikopol. “We understand that the flow of refugees is large enough to make housing a real issue. Moreover, as the winter approaches, the most pressing objective is to prevent people from staying on the street. This project is the beginning of this great work,” head of the regional council Yevhen Udod said. The council has allocated a land plot for the project which is 100 percent ready for the construction of modular housing, as it is connected to all the necessary networks, like electricity, heating, and sewage disposal. Modular buildings themselves and installation work will be provided by the GIZ.

The housing consists of one-story buildings, where each family will have its own bedroom and living room. In addition, the building will be equipped with kitchen units, laundries, bathrooms with showers, children’s play areas, and study rooms. All rooms will get insulation and heating. Refugees in need of accommodation for a few days will be offered a bed in a common sleeping area.
