Ukraine’s long farewell to the USSR

How to have a real closure to our relationship with the Soviet legacy? How can we leave Soviet holdovers in the past and start building modern Ukraine without resorting to totalitarian legacy? What modern Latvia and Ukraine have in common? All these issues will be discussed by Ukrainian and Latvian historians at the roundtable “Latvia’s Experience in Overcoming the Consequences of Totalitarianism, to be held at the National University of Kyiv Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) on February 18. Incidentally, The Day is the event’s main media partner. The roundtable will be broadcast online at day.kiev.ua from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The panelists will include Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia in Ukraine Argita Daudze; deputy director for development of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia 1940-91 Gunars Nagels; deputy director of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia 1940-91 Ritvars Jansons; president of the NaUKMA Serhii Kvit; director of the Center for Liberation Movement Studies Alina Shpak; Candidate of Historical Sciences, director of the NaUKMA’s Center for History of the 20th Century Ukrainian State Building Volodymyr Viatrovych; Candidate of Historical Sciences, Research Fellow at the Center for Liberation Movement Studies Oleksandr Ishchuk; and expert on access to archives at the Center for Liberation Movement Studies Ihor Kulyk.
