November 7 1917: The Small Rada adopts the Central Rada’s Third Universal proclaiming the Ukrainian National Republic (UNR) as a part of federated Russia.

1951: Ukraine’s first TV center goes into operation in Kyiv.

November 8 1927: Construction of the Dniprovska Hydroelectric Station begins in Zaporizhia.

2004: President Alexander Kwasniewski of Poland declares that democracy is making headway in Ukraine, as evidenced by the Ukrainian presidential elections.

November 9 1976: The Ukrainian Helsinki Watch Group is founded in Kyiv.

1977: The Ukrainian Helsinki Watch Group publishes the “Manifesto of the Ukrainian Human Rights Movement.”

November 10 1970: The Soviet Union launches the research space station Luna 17 that lands the first unmanned lunar rover Lunokhod-1, controlled from earth.

2004: The Central Election Committee announces the results of the first round of the presidential elections and the winner, Viktor Yushchenko.

November 11 1920: Red Army units and Nestor Makhno’s army seize Perekop, clearing the way to the Crimean peninsula.

1921: A church synod convened in Kyiv proclaims the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church headed by Metropolitan Vasyl Lypkivsky.

November 12 1772: The Crimea is proclaimed independent of the Ottoman Empire.

1992: The coupon-karbovanets is introduced in Ukraine.

November 13 1708: Russian troops led by Aleksandr Menshikov occupy the hetman capital of Baturyn. Most of the defenders and residents of the fortress are massacred.

1918: The Ukrainian National Council adopts a temporary Fundamental Law on the national independence of the Ukrainian territories of former Austro-Hungary. The new state formation receives the name “Western Ukrainian People’s Republic.”
