As soon as tomorrow the City of Lion will start receiving the traditional Photo Exhibit “Den 2014.” The days of our publication in Lviv will be held at the invitation of the Lviv City Council and the city’s mayor Andrii Sadovy, the National University “Lviv Polytechnic” and the International Institute of Education, Culture, and Relations with the Diaspora. On the second floor of the Culture-Art Center “Lviv Palace of Arts” (17         Kopernyka St.) the visitors will be able to see, feel, and live through over 150 photos among the winners of the 16th International Photo Competition of the newspaper Den sent from all the corners of Ukraine both by professional photographers and amateurs. And several hours after the launch of the exhibit (at 15:00) in the conference hall of the National University “Lviv Polytechnic” Den’s editor-in-chief Larysa Ivshyna will have a debate with the readers dedicated to the topic “How can we win?” During the meeting the editor will present the new book Ukraine Incognita. TOP 25, which has been published in three languages, for the students, professors, public figures, and intellectuals. Perhaps, through the prism of outstanding personalities it will help the readers see the ways which will help us win.

The Lvivites are already anticipating the large-scale events. City Mayor Andrii SADOVY is sure that everything the newspaper Den is doing evokes great interest in society. “The reason is that this is a newspaper that unites wise people and creates a groundwork for building strong, powerful, and wise Ukraine. There is an environment of the newspaper which in fact is a horizon and a guide. I am proud that we in Ukraine have such a newspaper and that it holds numerous intellectual projects that we badly need today, books, photo exhibits, the glossy supplement Route No. 1, and many others on an annual basis,” the mayor says. “I’m sure that everyone must see the photo exhibit the newspaper brings to Lviv.”

Rector of the National University “Lviv Polytechnic” Prof. Yurii BOBALO attended Den’s Photo Exhibit many times and not only in Lviv. For him it is an exploration, which is followed by discovery of a new sense, because this is the reason why it is always unique and interesting. “I think it aims at evoking in a person a feeling of the day and reconsideration of everything that is going on in the country. This is done so subtly that the person becomes a ‘hostage’ of the exhibit without noticing it. S/he starts to want more and more,” says Bobalo. “The visitors see life in the photos, because they represent concrete people who to some or other extent convey their world, which makes they rejoice, care, and suffer – this is one of the most important things. When you look at the photos and feel what they live with, because this is present in their eyes and face expressions. It is important to carry out such initiatives at least for the reason that a person starts looking at the surrounding world differently and what they see changes them.” According to the rector of the Lviv Polytechnic, this time he will try to look at it through the prism of the national character.

It will be reminded that traditionally all the visitors of the exhibit will be able to feel as jury members, giving their votes for the photo they will find the most interesting. On the closing day the audience’s favorite selected by Lviv readers and consumers of Den’s intellectual product will be announced based on this voting.

As usual, the Den’s exhibits are a photo chronicle of what Ukraine’s life was like during the past year. And it was a concentration of challenges and trials. Therefore we invite everyone to the exposition, which will be open April 29 through May 10. The admission is free, from 11 a.m. till 6 p.m., except for Monday.
