Euromaidan activist Serhii Nigoyan was shot dead in Hrushevskoho Street on January 22, 2014. The cruel irony of fate had him hit by bullets to his neck and head on the Day of Unity and Freedom, making him the first victim of Viktor Yanukovych’s regime, to be listed with the Heavenly Sotnia later on. The story of Nigoyan’s brief life has become known throughout Ukraine, and the photo of a brave sad-eyed young man has traveled around the planet. The anniversary of the brave Dnipropetrovsk region native’s death will be marked in his hometown, the village of Bereznovatka, Solone raion, where he lies buried beneath a granite monument.

“We will commemorate Nigoyan in his hometown of Bereznovatka on the day of his death together with his family, friends, and comrades. Let me recall that the school where he studied has been named in his honor. We are working now on renaming a public garden in Bereznovatka as well,” executive director of the Grigor Lusavorich Dnipropetrovsk Regional Armenian Culture Association Anaida Arzumanova told us. Nigoyan grew up in a family of Armenian refugees settled in Dnipropetrovsk region and studied at a physical education college in Dniprodzerzhynsk. Lately, Euromaidan veterans have initiated renaming of a main avenue in Dnipropetrovsk in his honor and launched a signature drive in favor of this measure.
